Local #17 was formed in 1896 so that men and women working in the Sheet Metal Industry could bargain collectively for a good day's pay with benefits for a good day's work. Through the years our union has taken the lead in the Industry, negotiating contracts that have made our members the highest paid with the best benefit package of any Sheet Metal Worker organization in all of New England. The Sheet Metal arm of SMART, formerly the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, represents 136,000 members in the sheet metal and related trades. Our union has a reputation for providing its signatory partners and customers a professionally trained work force that strives to always deliver excellence in workmanship, training, skill and integrity. SMART strives, through its industry’s code of excellence to be honest, trustworthy, productive and reliable for a long-lasting relationship. SMART construction apprentices and journeymen use the newest equipment and training in their day-to-day work. The training SMART members receive is done through a 4-year apprentice program, on the job and extensive classroom training. SMART journeymen continue to advance their skills and certifications utilizing our world class training centers to stay abreast of changes in technology and work practices.

Attendees are responsible for all travel accommodations and expenses.

Courses in Benchmark BIM drafting and fabrication training software, TAB technician certification, and HVAC energy audit technician certification are now open to all members in good standing, no matter where the member is located.

The Sheet Metal Industry International Certification Board is a committee of National Energy management Institute Committee for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry. NEMIC is a trust, under agreement between the SMWIA and SMACNA. The ICB is, at all times responsible to and supervised by the Trustees of NEMIC. The ICB is an activity of NEMIC. The mission of the ICB is to direct and implement a comprehensive set of certification programs to assure customers of the sheet metal industry of the quality advantages of utilizing persons or entities certified by ICB. The certification programs over which the ICB has juridiction are established by NEMIC's Trustees.
